and anyway, i agree. they kill flies too and flies are possibly the most annoying creatures on the planet. (or maybe mosquitos) so i wouldnt kill a spider on purpose. this one just happened to run towards me when i pushed my roller chair back :s

he was only little! well, quite big in spider standards, but little all the same and he ran behind my chair. how was i supposed to know?

the full story:

Peter had lived in my room for about a month now. He climbed up the walls, sat in the corner and all in all did nothing much with his life. We'd talked about his life and what he planned to do in the future but he never commited to anything. With eight legs to use, it was all the easier to run away.

I began to worry about Peter a few days back when he stopped eating. A couple of wasps and insects buzzed through my open window but Peter took no notice, retreating into the shadows like he was ashamed of himself. I'd never seen him act so reserved. He was usually the life of the party, dancing and showing off his skills on the tightrope and taking the all you can eat menu a little too seriously; so to see him so quiet and still was disturbing.

Things quickly deteriorated when i came home one day to find him hanging from one of the fibres in his web. His body was limp and his little legs didn't even twitch when i lifted him, but he had a pulse. I had arrived just in time.
We discussed his suicidal tendancies over dinner that night. (wasp burger and flies for him; ham toastie for me.) Turns out he'd been depressed for a while. "Under the webber" he called it. I looked outside and watched the rain pour down the pane. Everyone was under the weather these days.

He slept on my bedside table that night, not wanting to be alone after such a day. I watched over him as he drifted away, his twenty eyes blinking simultaneously in drowsyness.

I had thought the worst was over. Peter knew he could tell me his problems and i knew i could be there for him. How wrong i had been.

Today, at 12 o'clock GMT, Peter ran out behind me. Everytime i went on the computer he would watch me roll backwards and forwards on my chair; the wheels carving treads in the carpet. I had thought he saw their danger; in truth he saw their freedom.

That is the story of Peter the spider.
He will be sadly missed but it is what he wanted.
